This is how parental leave changes
Extended Double Days
Let's start with the double days. In the past, parents have been able to stay off together for 30 days during the child's first year of life. From July 1, 2024, these days will double to 60, and they can be used until the child is 15 months old.
What are double days?
Double days simply mean that both parents can take out parental leave at the same time. These have thus been extended to 60 days, from the previous 30 days.
The possibility of transferring parental allowance
Another big change is the ability to pass parental allowance to close relatives, such as grandparents, siblings or close friends. This is a particularly important change for single parents, who can now get more support from their network.
Here's how it works
Parents with joint custody can transfer 45 days each, while single parents can transfer 90 days. The only prerequisite is that the person receiving the days has their own Sick Money Basic Income (SGI).
A practical example
Imagine a single mother who finds it difficult to combine her work with caring for her child. With the new rules, she can now, for example, entrust some parenting days to her sister, who can help out for a period.
Purpose of the new rules
Flexibility and gender equality
The new rules aim to create more flexibility and equality in working life. Parents are now given more freedom to decide for themselves how they want to use their parental allowance, which is seen as an important step towards a more modern and adaptable work environment.
Strengthens the work line
The changes also help strengthen the line of work. By making it easier for parents to combine work and family life, more parents can stay in work, benefiting businesses as well as society.
How will businesses and employers be affected by the new rules?
Businesses are not really significantly affected by the changes, but the new rules should first and foremost be seen as a chance for greater flexibility and a better opportunity to offer a better work-life balance.
It is important to plan now
That said, as an employer, it is important to know the changes and start planning for them right now. Be sure to update your internal procedures and ensure that information about the new rules is clear and accessible to all employees.
